    On the Complex Network Structure of Musical Pieces: Analysis of Some Use Cases from Different Music Genres

    This paper focuses on the modeling of musical melodies as networks. Notes of a melody can be treated as nodes of a network. Connections are created whenever notes are played in sequence. We analyze some main tracks coming from different music genres, with melodies played using different musical instruments. We find out that the considered networks are, in general, scale free networks and exhibit the small world property. We measure the main metrics and assess whether these networks can be considered as formed by sub-communities. Outcomes confirm that peculiar features of the tracks can be extracted from this analysis methodology.     Exploratory factor analysis of graphical features for link prediction in social networks

    Social Networks attract much attention due to their ability to replicate social interactions at scale. Link prediction, or the assessment of which unconnected nodes are likely to connect in the future, is an interesting but non-trivial research area. Three approaches exist to deal with the link prediction problem: feature-based models, Bayesian probabilistic models, probabilistic relational models. In feature-based methods, graphical features are extracted and used for classification. Usually, these features are subdivided into three feature groups based on their formula. Some formulas are extracted based on neighborhood graph traverse. Accordingly, there exists three groups of features, neighborhood features, path-based features, node-based features. In this paper, we attempt to validate the underlying structure of topological features used in feature-based link prediction. The results of our analysis indicate differing results from the prevailing grouping of these features, which indicates that current literatures\u27 classification of feature groups should be redefined. Thus, the contribution of this work is exploring the factor loading of graphical features in link prediction in social networks.     Structure-Activity Relationship for the Oxadiazole Class of Antibiotics

    The structure-activity relationship (SAR) for the newly discovered oxadiazole class of antibiotics is described with evaluation of 120 derivatives of the lead structure. This class of antibiotics was discovered by in silico docking and scoring against the crystal structure of a penicillin-binding protein. They impair cell-wall biosynthesis and exhibit activities against the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant and linezolid-resistant S. aureus. 5-(1H-Indol-5-yl)-3-(4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (antibiotic 75b) was efficacious in a mouse model of MRSA infection, exhibiting a long half-life, a high volume of distribution, and low clearance. This antibiotic is bactericidal and is orally bioavailable in mice. This class of antibiotics holds great promise in recourse against infections by MRSA.Fil: Spink, Edward.     Identification of novel common variants associated with chronic pain using conditional false discovery rate analysis with major depressive disorder and assessment of pleiotropic effects of LRFN5

    Chronic pain is a complex trait that is moderately heritable and genetically, as well as phenotypically, correlated with major depressive disorder (MDD). Use of the conditional false discovery rate (cFDR) approach, which leverages pleiotropy identified from existing GWAS outputs, has been successful in discovering novel associated variants in related phenotypes. Here, genome-wide association study outputs for both von Korff chronic pain grade and for MDD were used to identify variants meeting a cFDR threshold for each outcome phenotype separately, as well as a conjunctional cFDR (ccFDR) threshold for both phenotypes together. Using a moderately conservative threshold, we identified a total of 11 novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), six of which were associated with chronic pain grade and nine of which were associated with MDD. Four SNPs on chromosome 14 were associated with both chronic pain grade and MDD. SNPs associated only with chronic pain grade were located within SLC16A7 on chromosome 12. SNPs associated only with MDD were located either in a gene-dense region on chromosome 1 harbouring LINC01360, LRRIQ3, FPGT and FPGT-TNNI3K, or within/close to LRFN5 on chromosome 14. The SNPs associated with both outcomes were also located within LRFN5. Several of the SNPs on chromosomes 1 and 14 were identified as being associated with expression levels of nearby genes in the brain and central nervous system. Overall, using the cFDR approach, we identified several novel genetic loci associated with chronic pain and we describe likely pleiotropic effects of a recently identified MDD locus on chronic pain

    Recurrent cardiovascular events with paclitaxel-eluting versus bare-metal stents in saphenous vein graft lesions: Insights from the sos (stenting of saphenous vein grafts) trial

    The Stenting of Saphenous Vein Grafts (SOS) trial demonstrated a reduction in clinical and angiographic adverse events with paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES) compared to bare-metal stents (BMS) in saphenous vein graft (SVG) lesions, but the rate of recurrent adverse events has not been described. METHODS: We performed a post hoc, landmark analysis to evaluate the risk of event recurrence following a non-fatal initial event among the SOS trial patients (pts). RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 35 months, the 80 pts enrolled in SOS experienced a total of 78 major cardiovascular events (MACE): 51 in the BMS group and 27 in PES group. No MACE were found in 28 pts (35) while 52 pts (65) had at least one event. The initial event was death in 13 pts (16). Among the 39 pts whose initial event was not fatal, 12 (31) had one or more subsequent MACE (50 of which were definitely related to the study SVG). The mean and median number of MACE per patient was significantly higher in patients receiving BMS versus PES (1.3 ± 1.2 and 1 ± 1.26 versus 0.6 ± 0.7 and 1 ± 0.825, p ≤ 0.005 and p ≤ 0.008, respectively). The rate of a second MACE following an initial event was 17 in the PES group and 37 in the BMS group (p ≤ 0.24). Ten of 12 pts with recurrent events had received a BMS (83). Conclusion: Pts undergoing SVG stenting had a high rate of recurrent events after an initial non-fatal event. These events were often related to the target vessel and most occurred in pts who had received a BMS, further supporting the benefit of PES over BMS in SVG lesions

    Drug-eluting versus bare-metal stent for treatment of saphenous vein grafts: a meta-analysis.

    BACKGROUND: Saphenous vein grafts develop an aggressive atherosclerotic process and the efficacy of drug eluting stents (DES) in treating saphenous vein graft (SVG) lesions has not been convincingly demonstrated. The aim of this study was to review and analyze the current literature for controlled studies comparing DES versus bare metal stents (BMS) for treatment of SVG stenoses. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We searched several scientific databases and conference proceedings up to March 15, 2010 for controlled studies comparing target vessel revascularization (TVR) between DES and BMS. Summary odds ratios (OR) for the primary endpoint TVR and secondary endpoints infarction, stent thrombosis and death were calculated using random-effect models. A total of 29 studies (3 randomized controlled trials RCT) involving 7549 (202 in RCT) patients were included. The need for target vessel revascularization in the DES group tended to be lower compared to BMS for the 3 RCT (OR 0.50 [0.24-1.00]; p = 0.051) and for observational studies (0.62 [0.49-0.79]; p<0.001). There was no significant difference in the risk for myocardial infarction in the RCT (OR 1.25 [0.22-6.99]; p = 0.250) but a lower risk for DES based on the observational studies 0.68 [0.49-0.95]; p = 0.023. The risk for stent thrombosis was found to be non-different in the RCT (OR 0.78 [0.03-21.73], p = 0.885) while it was in favor of DES in the observational studies (0.58 [0.38 - 0.84]; p<0.001). The mortality was not significantly different between DES and BMS in the RCT's (OR 2.22 [0.17 - 29.50]; p = 0.546) while the observation studies showed a decreased mortality in the DES group (0.69 [0.55-0.85]; p<0.001). CONCLUSION: DES may decrease TVR rate in treatment of SVG stenoses. No differences in reinfarction rate, stent thrombosis or mortality was found between the DES and BMS groups in the RCT's while the observational data showed lower risk for myocardial infarction, stent thrombosis and death in the DES group. This may be a result of patient selection bias in the observational studies or represent a true finding that was not the detected in the RCT analysis due to limited statistical power
